Rainy days … in Lynton & Lynmouth
England is famous for rainy days, and North Devon and Exmoor are not excluded from that. If you think about it, we’re blessed to live in such a lush and verdant country, steeped in fascinating and diverse history. However, that means we always have to pack clothes for every season … in one day and be armed with a list of contingencies for a rainy day to keep everyone occupied and amused.
Here are a few of our suggestions for a rainy day in Lynton & Lynmouth, and beyond …
Local shops and cafes
In both Lynton & Lynmouth, you will find plenty of shops offering everything from; gifts, clothing, art and objects of desire, games and toys, books and fine local foods. When you finished shopping you can enjoy delicious food and drink in one of the towns many welcoming cafes.
Find Local Shops
Even in the rain, this is a fascinating and historical journey. It’s just a short trip, approx. two mins – but the swiftest and easiest way to travel between the two villages of Lynton & Lynmouth.
Exmoor National Park Centre
If you want to know more about the Exmoor National Park then a visit here will teach you all you need to know. Check out their daily activities for art courses; drawing, painting etc. Upstairs is a great café which is open most of the year and offers splendid views out over the Bristol channel.
Flood Memorial Hall
Learn more about the devastating flood of 1952 that brought so much calamity to Lynmouth. See a model of Lynmouth how it used to look before 1952 and watch footage of the aftermath of that fateful day.
Lynmouth Model Railway
If you love model trains then you will find this absolutely captivating. Set in an unassuming old shop this model railway never fails to delight. It’s based on the LNER (London & North Eastern Railway) between 1935-1940.
Lyn Valley Arts & Crafts Centre
Set in an old church this is a wonderful Aladdin’s Cave chock full of gifts, accessories, arts and crafts all locally made in North Devon and Exmoor. It’s easy to lose track of time meandering through the myriad of treasures and keepsakes.
Lynton Toy Museum
Probably more for big kids than actual kids. This place is fascinating with toys, games and action figures from years long since passed. Just count how many times you recall playing with them as kids … you’ll be surprised.
Located in the heart of Lynton this delightful cinema seats just 60+ people. During the Summer months, there are two screenings; one in the daytime for families and another in the evening for general audiences.
National Trust Arlington Court
Sitting serenely on the edge of Exmoor, Arlington Court is just 15-20 minutes by car from Lynton & Lynmouth. It’s a beautiful periodic house built by the Chichester family in 1822. With over 2500 acres of gardens, woodland and countryside to explore, and Carriage Museum with over 40 carriages on display.
Seasoned walkers say … "there is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices".
Depending on the veracity of the downpour you could always consider heading out for a walk anyway. Rain sounds wonderful as it patters on the river and through the canopies of the trees, and there’s always that chance of a break in the clouds for the sun to shine through.#rainy days #bad weather #things to do in the rain
