The Lynton & Lynmouth Tourist Information Centre has served our area of Exmoor North Devon for over 50 years and during this time we have experienced many changes in the way visitors’ access information to make reservations and research the area before arrival and once they are here. We have tried to adapt to these changes, we were one of the first to have a web site and we have continued to improve our web and social media presence. Our web site VisitLyntonandLynmouth.com is ranked at the top of Google for Lynton & Lynmouth searches only surpassed by the paid for adverts of the global OTA’s such as Booking.com, Tripadvisor, LateRooms and Expedia which we can never financially compete with.
Historically we, along with the other TICs in North Devon, received a grant from North Devon District Council. The grant was given to provide an information service for the benefit of all tourism business in the area. The Tourist Information service is a free information service and providing this free information equates to about 98% of our working day.
However, this tourism grant was removed completely by North Devon District Council 4 years ago which we felt was a retrograde step, especially by a Council who represents an area so dependant on tourism for its survival! Since 2013 we have found it increasingly difficult to cover our operating costs without this grant.
Our main concern for the future is how we can keep the Tourist Office open to serve the many visitors who call into see us or telephone/email with their questions and requirements for accommodation and information to enhance their visit. Our office is also an important place for people to contact when they have a problem, especially if they are from abroad, this can be when they have lost or found items as there is now no Police Front Desk in Lynton, where to go for medical/dental treatment to one time when there was a wedding in the Town Hall and the legal documents had been left in Kent, we managed to get them sent by fax so the marriage could go ahead on time.
We approached our own Town Council for assistance and we are pleased to say they have valued our services to the area by providing a grant for which we are most grateful. We also wish to thank the Lyn Valley Art & Craft Centre in Lynton who have also been very supportive.
To help us maintain a Tourist Information Centre based here in Lynton please become a Supporter, we would also like to hear from anyone who might like to become a volunteer in Tourist Office.
